Inside The Inside

In the Tower Tours we take people up staircases built into the walls, and between the outer and inner roofs – we are walking “inside the inside” of the cathedral.  Here are some questions which I’ve been asked at different points on the tour:

The porter’s lodge: When did the sanctuary system stop?
The north triforium: Why are there square holes in the walls?
The West Window: Is this the oldest glass in the cathedral?
The south triforium: Why did so many people write on the walls?
Above the roof: Where did the wood come from?
At the clock: Why are the walls so fancy?
On the gallery: When was the reinforcing metalwork put in?
At the bells: Were these bells always here?
At the base of the spire: Is that a treadmill?
Looking west: Does the river often flood?
